Ice?Dynamical Glacier Evolution Modeling—A Review

چکیده

Glaciers play a crucial role in the Earth System: they are important water suppliers to lower-lying areas during hot and dry periods, major contributors observed present-day sea-level rise. can also act as source of natural hazards have touristic value. Given their societal importance, there is large scientific interest better understanding accurately simulating temporal evolution glaciers, both past future. Here, we give an overview state art individual glaciers over decadal centennial time scales with ice-dynamical models. We hereby highlight recent advances field emphasize how these go hand-in-hand increasing availability on-site remotely sensed observations. focus on gap between simplified studies that use parameterizations, typically used for regional global projections, detailed assessments explain now allow including ice dynamics when modelling at larger spatial scales. Finally, provide concrete recommendations concerning steps factors be considered glaciers. suggest paying particular attention model initialization, analysing related uncertainties input influence modelled glacier strongly recommend evaluating simulated against independent data.

The concept of glacier storage: a review

Glacier storage is a widely used term, applied to different processes and time-scales by different disciplines in hydrology and glaciology. We identify that storage occurs as ice, snow, and water associated with three time-scales. Long-term storage concerns storage of ice and firn as glaciers on time-scales of years to centuries and longer. This storage affects global sea level and long-term wa...

21st-century evolution of Greenland outlet glacier velocities.

Earlier observations on several of Greenland's outlet glaciers, starting near the turn of the 21st century, indicated rapid (annual-scale) and large (>100%) increases in glacier velocity. Combining data from several satellites, we produce a decade-long (2000 to 2010) record documenting the ongoing velocity evolution of nearly all (200+) of Greenland's major outlet glaciers, revealing complex sp...

A Large Rock Avalanche onto Morsárjökull Glacier, South-east Iceland. Its Implications for Ice-surface Evolution and Glacier Dynamics

In spring 2007, a large rock avalanche descended onto the Morsárjökull valley glacier in southeast Iceland, leaving one fifth of the glacier buried. The insulating effect of the deposit on the ice was quickly observed as a difference in the ablation between the exposed ice and that under the deposit. After three melt seasons, the ice surface under the deposit was 29 m above the surrounding glac...

Glacier surge mechanism: 1982-1983 surge of variegated glacier, alaska.

The hundredfold speedup in glacier motion in a surge of the kind the kind that took place in Variegated Glacier in 1982-1983 is caused by the buildup of high water pressure in the basal passageway system, which is made possible by a fundamental and pervasive change in the geometry and water-transport characteristics of this system. The behavior of the glacier in surge has many remarkable featur...
